Dear Parents and Carers
Home Learning Projects
I hope you have all chosen and started working on your home learning projects for this half term. It is an opportunity for you to learn together and model good habits of organisation as you plan how to allocate time to the project over the 6 weeks of the half term to ensure that it is completed on time. We were very impressed last term, and we are looking forward to seeing even more aspirational projects on our Open Afternoon which is planned for Wednesday 9th February (all projects need to be back in school for this date).
BG School Values: The BG ARK – Aspiration, Resilience and Kindness
We enjoyed hearing about the acts of kindness that the children have been demonstrating in school this week. Children nominated each other for a special mention in our regular Friday ARK Assembly this morning. This week, children have praised each other for helping other people with work; looking after each other on the playground; being supportive friends; taking care of younger children; and providing a reassuring, listening ear. We are lucky to have such kind children at BG!
From the Governors …
The school governors met on Tuesday (11th January), and would like to share the following points with you:
- Governors are looking forward to attending a monitoring afternoon this half term to explore the progress made against the different areas of the School Improvement Plan.
- Governors discussed the Autumn Term’s progress and attainment data, and were impressed to see the progress being made by pupils across all year groups and the impact of the curriculum initiatives that are being implemented.
- The positive impact of new writing initiatives such as Talk4Writing was evident in the Autumn Term’s data and governors are eager to discover how they will be embedded further by the whole school community.
- Governors were pleased to hear that attendance levels remain very good and above the national average.
- Governors agreed that the swimming pool is a fantastic facility to offer to pupils and are looking forward to working with the PTA and wider school community to ensure that it is operational for the summer term.
God and the Big Bang
On the afternoon of Tuesday 25th January, “God and the Big Bang”, based at the University of Durham, will be visiting to work with our Y5s and 6s as part of our SMSC (social, moral, spiritual and cultural) enrichment. They aim to provide students with the opportunity to discover, discuss and debate the compatibility of science and faith. The interactive workshops equip young people with the tools they need in order to form their own opinions and engage in rational, exciting, well-reasoned and thought-provoking discussion. There is a separate email for parents of Y5 and 6 about this visit.
Covid Update
Currently we have 2 children self-isolating while they recover from Covid, but no new cases this week.
The self-isolation rules will change again next week for people testing positive (via PCR or LFD) with Covid. From Monday 17 January, people who are self-isolating with COVID-19 will have the option to reduce their isolation period after 5 full days if they test negative with a lateral flow device (LFD) test on both day 5 and day 6 and they do not have a temperature. For example, if they test negative on the morning of day 5 and the morning of day 6, they can return to their education or childcare setting immediately on day 6.
The first test must be taken no earlier than day 5 of the self-isolation period, and the second must be taken the following day. All test results should be reported to NHS Test and Trace.
If the result of either of their tests is positive, they should continue to self-isolate until they get negative results from two LFD tests on consecutive days or until they have completed 10 full days of self-isolation, whichever is earliest.
Anyone who is unable to take LFD tests or anyone who continues to have a temperature will need to complete the full 10 day period of self-isolation.
(Please note that positive LFD tests no longer need to be confirmed by PCR tests: you should isolate immediately if your LFD is positive. If you or your child have been in contact with a positive case, you should carry out daily LFD tests for 7 days, even if you have had Covid in the previous 90 days. Please see the full guidance here. LFD tests are now recommended for use with everyone aged 5 and above.)
Reminder: Outdoor Historical Timeline
We are in the process of designing an exciting outdoor historical timeline for our school playground which every class will be able to use. We really want YOU to get involved... Wouldn't it be exciting to see your own fact on the timeline?
We are allowed up to 10 inclusions on our timeline. These will be historical facts which are personal to our school. For example, they could be dates linked to our school or the history of local notable places (e.g. local castles, canals, bridges, buildings etc.), local famous people, or local famous events.
We would love you to send us your researched ideas via class dojo or on paper to your teacher by Monday morning. You can enter as many ideas as you would like, however please make sure that they are all factually accurate!
Reminder: Bottle Tops
Please could you help us by sending in your clean, washed plastic milk bottle tops, squash, juice and toothpaste tops for Teresa Class’s next project? Thank you!
Reminder: Special Winter Olympics themed meal on Thursday 20th January
Schools are reimbursed annually by the government for the cost of providing free school meals for children in YR, Y1 and Y2. The money that we get back from the DfE to provide these meals is calculated from the number of YR, 1 and 2 children who have a school meal next Thursday (January 20th). It would be really helpful for the school’s finances if all children in YR, Y1 and Y2 could order a school meal on Thursday (it won’t cost you any money). Parents of children in KS2 (Y3, 4, 5 and 6) will be charged as normal. Thank you for your support with this.
There will also be one lunch tray with a lucky sticker – whoever gets this will wine a £5 Amazon voucher!
The menu for Thursday 20th January is:
Chicken Burger With BBQ Sauce & Salad
Vegetarian Lasagne With Garlic Bread
Crusty French Baguette (choice of fillings) Master
Fresh Jacket Potato (Choice of Fillings)
