10th September 2021

Dear Parents and Carers

We have been very lucky with the weather this week, and watching the children outside at play together has been such a pleasure.  Yesterday’s lunchtime game of “Duck, Duck, Goose”, which the older children organised and then played with YR and 1, was a joy to watch!  This week we are particularly proud of our Year 5 pupils who are “buddies” for the Reception and Y1 children - something we have been unable to do over the past 18 months.  They have welcomed and supported their buddies at lunchtimes – sitting and chatting with them and helping them with the lunchtime routine.  Well done Y5 buddies – you are doing a fantastic job!  Well done, too, to our new reception children who are settling in really well in Malala Class.  We look forward to having you with us full-time from Monday!

Home Learning Projects (HLPs)

The children have made enthusiastic starts to their learning projects for this half term.

Obama Class’s project is titled “Maafa”.  This project teaches children about Africa past and present and the development of the slave trade. It also explores Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, the causes and consequences of the European colonisation of Africa and the worldwide communities that make up the African diaspora.

Teresa Class are learning about “Burps, Bottoms and Bile” – they are on a voyage of discovery to investigate the busy world inside the human body, following a tasty morsel as it makes its way through the digestive system!

Einstein Class are “Street Detectives” - learning about our local community, looking at houses old and new and finding out how our streets have changed since their mums and dads were young!

Malala Class are finding out about “Me and My Community” – thinking about how they are unique and special, the importance of friendship and how people in their family, school and local community are important and can help them.

The children will bring home their HLP books today with a list of projects for you to choose from to complete at home together over the next five-and-a-half weeks.  We expect all children to complete at least one project. (You can do more if you want!) The HLPs need to be brought back to school by Wednesday 21st October to share with all of you at our first open afternoon of the year.  We hope you can all make it!

Covid procedures

Under current rules, it is expected that all children and staff continue to attend school unless they themselves have COVID symptoms or have tested positive, even if someone else in their household has COVID.  Please let us know if a member of your household has tested positive, so that we can keep an eye on your child and look out for the development of any symptoms at school.  This information will not be shared with the wider community.

We will carefully monitor the prevalence of cases in school, and work with the Local Authority and Public Health to identify any measures that need to be reinstated should there be an outbreak at BGPS.  To minimise the risk of this, it is important that you keep your child at home and take them for a PCR test if they have symptoms.  If a child develops symptoms at school, we will contact you to collect them.  If their PCR is positive, please let us know as soon as possible by ringing the office on 01638 507236 or emailing office@burroughgreen.cambs.sch.uk  NHS Test and Trace will carry out contact tracing for positive cases.

Friday 24th September – Macmillan fundraising

This year, we will be holding an in-school “coffee” morning for the children after we return from the church.  We would also like to have a cake sale after school to raise additional funds for this incredibly important charity which provides such valuable support in our community.  If you would be able to help set up and run the cake sale, please contact me.  Please support us by bringing cakes to school on Thursday 23rd or Friday 24th September for us to sell.  Individual cakes and biscuits always go down well.  Thank you!
