1st November 2019
Dear Parents/carers

Yesterday evening, a group of our Y6 children took part in a netball tournament against our cluster schools (Linton Heights (A and B teams), Meadow, Great Abington and Castle Camps) at Linton Village College.  They were playing High 5’s netball where the children rotate through the positions, so have to play in all roles, both attack and defence.  Miss McDowell accompanied the netballers and was really proud of the way they played as a team, and the support they gave each other. As a result of their fantastic teamwork, they managed to win all of their matches, and the tournament.  All of the children in Class 4 worked hard to improve their netball skills last term with the help of Dan Penfold and Miss McDowell, including practising their skills at playtimes.  Their dedication really paid off – well done Y5 and 6!  Hockey next!  Thank you, too, to the parents that volunteered their time to transport the team to LVC and back – we couldn’t have done it without you.

Spelling Bee

This afternoon we held our inaugural spelling bee.  Each house team was composed of a pupil from each year group, and there were three rounds: the countdown challenge; the independent speller; and the anagrams round.  There were some very tricky spellings in the independent speller round, and all of the children had a go.  The audience challenged themselves to try all of the rounds, too.  It was very close – Green and Blue teams were in joint third place, Yellow team was second and the winner of the spelling trophy was Red team. I wonder who will win next time!

Reminder - Y6 Information Evening

On Wednesday 6th November we will be holding a meeting at 7pm for the parents of our Y6 children.  Please come and find out more about Y6 expectations, end of Y6 assessment (including the SATs), and transition to secondary school.  (Please note, this is a meeting for parents and is not suitable for children.)

Science club

Thank you for your offers of help.  Miss Chubb will be starting science club next Tuesday lunchtime for Y3 and 4.  Other year groups will have the chance to go to science club later in the year.

We have recently introduced a new handwriting scheme in school to improve presentation and pride in the children’s work.  They are able to access this at home – there are lots of different activities to try.  Well done to those children who have been having a go at home over half term.  It is very easy to access on tablets at  Details about how to log in are attached to this letter.

Poppy Appeal

Next week in school we will be collecting donations for the Royal British Legion Poppy appeal.  We have a variety of items as well as the traditional poppies: zip pulls (suggested donation 50p), poppy reflector tags (suggested donation 50p), silicon wristbands (suggested donation £1), and snap bands (suggested donation £1.50).  School council will be collecting donations each day next week.  If you would like your child to make a donation, please send the money to school with your child in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name and the item(s) that they would like to receive in return for their donation, and an alternative choice: as there is only a limited number of each item, it may not be possible for them to have their first choice.
